Guidelines for a paid leave from work to vote in the European Parliament Elections
The Directorate General of Labour of the Community of Madrid, establishes the criteria to facilitate the right to vote in the European Parliament Elections, which will take place on June 9, 2024, for employed workers.
Paid leave from work to vote
- Workers whose working hours do not coincide with the opening of the polling stations or do so for a period of less than two hours: they shall not be entitled to paid leave.
- Workers whose work schedule coincides in two or more hours and less than four hours: They shall be entitled to paid leave of two hours.
- Workers whose work schedule coincides in four or more hours and less than six hours: They shall be entitled to three hours of paid leave.
- Workers whose work schedule coincides in six or more hours: They shall be granted paid leave of four hours.
Voting by mail in the European Parliament Elections
- Those persons who work on June 9, 2024, far from their usual place of residence, or in other conditions that hinder the right to vote, shall be entitled to have the previous leave replaced by leave of an identical nature. This is for the purpose of personally submitting the request for the certificate accrediting their registration in the Census (article 72 of Organic Law 5/1985, of June 19, 1985), as well as for the submission of the vote by mail.
- The duration of the above-mentioned shall be calculated according to the opening hours of the Post Offices.
The workers hired on a part-time basis shall be granted leave in proportion to their working hours. - It will correspond to the employer the organization of the work, in the period in which the workers go to vote.
Paid leave for workers who have the condition of president or vocals of the electoral tables, interveners and proxies.
- The presidents, members, and voting officers shall be entitled to paid leave during the entire working day corresponding to the day of the vote, if they do not enjoy the weekly rest on that date. Additionally, they are entitled to five hours of paid leave on the day immediately following the day of the vote.
- In the case of proxies, the leave shall include the working day corresponding to the day of voting. If any of them were on night shift on the date prior to the voting day, the company, at the request of the interested party, shall change their shift.
